The Visions of the South retrospective begins tonight at the Belcourt Theatre with a screening of Elia Kazan’s Wild River. The Belcourt staff has been planning and working on putting Visions of the South together for years, and now the result is a 23-film series that surveys 20th century film depicting life in the Southeastern US. I’m really excited that there are several rare screenings included in this retrospective, and that several of the obvious choices (Gone with the Wind, Nashville) were omitted in favor of some more authentic choices. Film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum wrote a frisky article this week about the series, and he’ll be introducing The Phenix City Story tomorrow night. | |||||||||||
