In honor of Kiarostami and Kaurismaki, whose latest movies - Kiarostami’s Certified Copy and Kaurismaki’s Le Havre - were two of my favorites of 2011, here’s a rough translation of the above Finnish anecdote about an incident from 2002, when their latest films were Ten and The Man Without a Past. Abbas Kiarostami was invited to a festival held in the United States after Sept. 11 (the 2002 New York Film Festival). Kiarostami was denied an American visa because he is Iranian, even though he is also a well-known director, due to the rampant fear of terrorism in the United States. The festival had also invited Kaurismäki that year, and he was able to secure a visa with no problem. But upon learning about the situation with Kiarostami’s visa, he decides to decline the festival’s invitation in protest. Kaurismaki later explained, “if the present government of the United States of America does not want an Iranian, they will hardly have any use for a Finn either. We do not have the oil.” I also found this article about that incident: | |||||||||||
